The goals of the Summer Reading Program at CHSPC are to enhance the reading life of our students, to expand the curriculum, and to promote the belief that reading is one of life's great pleasures. To that end, the Summer Reading Program consists of two parts. At each grade level, students must read the required novel, ANDthey must choose an age level appropriate novel. For the requred book, students will be tested by teacher-constructed tests during the first weeks of school This is a 50-point grade for the first quarter in either English or Reading class. For your convenience, books may be borrowed from the Pointe Coupee Parish Library or may be purchased at Still Waters.
Also, students must choose an age level appropriate novel as part of their summer reading. During the first week of school, students must be prepared to write an in-class essay based upon chosen novel. This is a 50-point grade for the first quarter in either English or Reading class. To assist with choosing an age level appropriate novel, you may utilize www.barnesandnoble.com. Once you choose a book, the detailed information will provide an age range.
7th Grade Required:Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls A young boy living in the Ozarks achieves his heart's desire when he becomes the owner of two redbone hounds and teachers them to be champion hunters.
8th Grade Required:The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain The adventures and pranks of a mischievous boy growing up in a Mississippi River town in the early nineteenth century.
9th Grade Required:To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird follows three years in the life of 8-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus - three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman. Though her story explores big themes, Harper Lee chooses to tell it through the eyes of a child. The result is a tough and tender novel of race, class, justice, and the pain of growing up.
10th Grade Required:A Gathering of Old Men by Ernest Gaines Set on a Louisiana sugarcane plantation in the 1970's, A Gathering of Old Men is a powerful depiction of racial tensions arising over the death of a Cajun farmer.
11th Grade Required:The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The timeless story of Jay Gatsby and his love for Daisy Buchanan is widely acknowledged to be the closest thing to the Great American Novel ever written.
12th Grade Required:Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley A monster assembled by a scientist from parts of dead bodies develops a mind of his own as he learns to loathe himself and hate his creator.
